who is phipps?

Post by bill711 »

Thank,s Joe; I have come across it pretty often in my reading BUT I couldn,t decide how to pronounce it. If the Richard Holmes really told Brownie the story I have to beleive it. Because at some point in time some information made Richard convinced enough to become a drciphile of the Jake,s mine. He devoted tooo much time to the finding of it from an early age in his life. He always hung around the Jake like a buzzard waiting for a slip. Bill 8)

Sluicebox; You will find out that due to time You will just have to select the story that makes the most sense to fit your puzzle UNTIL you find out differently. The whole story is so garbbled by time that it is nothing like what really took place back then. So you will have to make some allowency,s for it. EVEN the most honest hunters didn,t/changed some of the story to thro other hunters off the trail. IN the early days there was alot of rivallry for the hunt. IT turned into a cut throat business and still continues up unto this very day. When I came on this forum I had my work cut out for me to get the boys to do more than fart at me and come at me like abunch of junk yard dogs. They still get mad when I josh em alittle bit and they still seeth at me until they cool off and think of how foolish it is to get mad or have hard feelings over some point of disagreement. When I come to the forum they were all scared to death that they were going to let some vital info leek out and they would not let out a peep. JOE were having to ask the questions and then he had to answer the questions to have someone to talk to. HE was desperate to keep the forum going. NOBODY would talk. TO this day I still am not sure if JOE is the true PETER or NOT. I cannot tell??? BUT I am suspesiece of them??? Bill 8)

Bill, I certainly agree with what you have said in your last post. It's especially true for a new comer to the game because there are no established relationships of trust to knowledgable people. In one of Aurums first posts on this subject he noted that his faith in the story came as much or more from his personal trust of the person relating the story to him as from the "facts". For those that don't have close connections to the "old timers", getting information you feel comfortable with is certainly trial and error.

The new twist on the Jenkins Lost Load is a good example. I'm just now getting around to reading the pamplet. After reading it, I still don't have a clue as to who might be telling the tallest tale. Which one is the smoke screen, the old tale or the new one? I think that is why this forum is a good thing for a new comer. Opinions and facts here are challenged and scrutinized, and assumptions are questioned. Even if the members here are not willing to put their "personal best evidence" out on the table for everyone, the common knowledge and resources shared here are a "Duthcman puzzle piece bonanza" for a new guy like myself. Certainly the line between critiquing the message and critiquing the messenger is ocassionally crossed or misinterpreted, but most seem to get over it and move on. Welcome to human nature. There seems to me to be a lot of knowledgable and experienced Dutch Hunters here who enjoy the personl reward of helping others. If tapping into that resource can keep me from being swept down a stream they have already learned to forge, I genuinly appreciate that. If one has no personally trusted sources, then being able to engage in a critical dialogue with a source of accumulated knowledeg and experience is the next best thing. I would like to say thanks to all here who have helped me put the border around my own Dutchman's puzzle. Regards, Sluicebox

I might add Sluice I think this forum is better than any book going because you can talk TO or BACKSASS,RIDACULE or whatever. YOU cannot do that to a BOOK....Bill 8)

Keeping Score

Post by Joe Ribaudo »

Bill,

You have pretty much hit the nail on the head here. It's a sign of the times.

The Teacher's Union doesn't want to test the teachers or grade the students. Some places no longer keep score at Little League games. No answer is wrong. Everything is just perfect, so be happy. :)

Many Dutch Hunters have rather large heads, including myself, of course.
They can't stand hearing that their pet theories may be wrong, or that they might want to consider another angle. While they may claim to consider all of the information that is available, if it doesn't fit in their personal box, the blinders just get snugged up a little tighter.

The wide ranging information that gets discussed here is more than worth the constant little snits where someone gets their panties in a bunch. In the final analysis, information gets exchanged and those who stay in the conversation will shape the direction and content of what is discussed.

Those who get their feeling hurt will hang around reading the thoughts of others, all the while staying safe, superior and smug in their silence. No risk, no loss. A "fast track" to nowhere.

Respectfully,

Joe
